Role of a Rotary Tiller or Rotavator in Soil Tillage

Tillage is needed to be done to change soil structure andmake it compatible to make seedbed with controlling weeds and managing crop residues. It is also needed to minimize soil erosion and to establish upper layer for planting and irrigation etc. Tillage operations usually conducted in primaryand secondary steps where primary tillage operation includes some initial soil operations normally designed to loosen the soil and hand secondary tillage operations are performed to create refined soil conditions for plating crops.

When it comes to tillage equipments a mould-board ploughis the most common equipment used for secondary tillage, while a rotavator isused as primary as well as secondary tillage equipment. Nowadays a rotary tiller needs the power from the tractor PTO. Its versatility and reduced capability to attain the desired outcome in manipulating the soil are the two reasons for considering it more complex farm equipment.

Using rotavator allows minimum tillage which is necessaryfor reducing the use of mechanical energy and labor requirement in soil tillage. It also helps to conserve the natural moisture in soil by minimizing the number of rounds needed to prepare it over the field. The high quality of pulverization also makes rotary tillers suitable for seedbed preparation. Thus we can say that a rotary tiller is a perfect equipment to be used as a minimum tillage system.
